    The Bureau of Public Health Nursing is a New York State Department of Health, Certified Home Health Agency working together with community programs and providers improving the health and quality of life for the residents of Suffolk County with many health needs. SBIRT and NARCAN trainings have been completed by the Public Health Nursing team. Both trainings are related to substance abuse. SBIRT is a screening process tool. NARCAN training teaches when and how to administer an aerosol form of the drug naloxone to an individual who is overdosing.

  • Communicable Disease Prevention and Control

    Communicable disease may be spread from person to person or animal to person through bodily fluids or direct contact. Spread of contagious disease may also occur by inhaling infected air or ingesting infected food or water. Essex County Public Health Department is responsible for minimizing the impact of communicable disease, through mandated activities such as investigation, reporting, education and outreach, and promoting prevention strategies. Essex County Public Health offers immunizations, prevention and control of rabies, tick and mosquito-borne disease, and education, screening, and counseling for HIV, HCV, and STD.

  • Preventive Services

    Preventive health programs provide a broad range of services for county residents which include: home visits for health assessment, guidance, and supervision; communicable disease case investigation for reportable diseases; community screenings and education along with other services for health and human service agencies, schools, businesses and residents.

    Diagnostic and Treatment Center (Clinic): Numerous clinic services are provided to prevent and control the spread of communicable diseases. Some services are provided without charge. For others, donations or established fees are requested.

    Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinic: Tuesdays, 12:30pm - 3:30pm. Offering STD assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Patient counseling and community education help control and prevent disease. For HIV, education, anonymous and confidential pre and post-test counseling, testing, follow-up and referral services are provided. HIV counseling and testing is integrated with the STD assessment to ensure the provision of comprehensive health care for all patients. Clinic services are provided without charge during Tuesday walk-in clinics, as well as by appointment for specific follow up as necessary.

    Immunization Clinic: Wednesdays, 12:30pm - 3:30pm. Offering 18 infant, adolescent, and adult vaccines that are required and recommended. Appointments are now available. Click here to make an appointment today. We will be open until 5pm on July 1, August, 5, and September 9.

  • Environmental Health

    Public Water Supply: inspections and surveys are performed at public water supplies.

    Permitted Facility Inspections: Operation and maintenance of facilities serving the public will minimize disease outbreaks and health risks. In the Food Protection Program, restaurant inspections are regulated and standardized. Temporary Residence Program inspections include hotels, motels, campgrounds, and children's camps. Public Bathing Facility inspections are performed any place where residents are swimming, with the exception of swimming areas at Allegany State Park. Tattoo/Body Piercing program inspections are performed to prevent infections and transmission of blood-borne pathogens.

    Contaminant Control: includes Childhood Lead Poisoning Control if a referral from Nursing Division states child has elevated lead in bloodwork, Clean Indoor Air Act

    (CIAA), Adolescent Tobacco Use Prevention Act (ATUPA), and Hazardous Chemical/Radiological Waste Site Remediation.

    Vector Control: Rabies Vaccination Clinics offered every January, May and September; Mosquito Surveillance and Control begins in May, ends in August; Lyme Disease/Deer Tick Education programs are ongoing.

  • Child Passenger Safety Seat Program- Car seat Fitting Station

    Parents, caregivers and guardians are invited to attend Ardent Solutions' free car seat fitting stations on the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 1:00-4:00pm at St. Phillip's Episcopal Church, 12 Willets Avenue, Belmont NY 14813.

    Participants will learn how to install their child's care seat correctly, have their car seat replaced if the seat is not safe and if the family meets eligibility guidelines.
