Tax preparation season generally runs February through April on specific scheduled days and times. Appointment is required, no walk-ins. Please contact Wood Library for appointment, space is limited.
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide offers free tax preparation help to anyone and if you’re 50 and older, and can’t afford a tax preparation service, we were made especially for you. We understand that retirement or other life changes may mean your taxes are a little more complicated now. With the help of our team of IRS-certified volunteers we make it easy for you.
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide has more than 5,000 locations in neighborhood libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers. There’s no fee and no sales pitch for other services and AARP membership is not required.

Offers free state and federal income tax return preparation services
The VITA Program from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and United Way of Broome County offers free tax help to low to moderate income (generally $49,000 and below) to people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Certified volunteers sponsored by various organizations receive training to help prepare basic tax returns in communities across the country. Most locations offer free electronic filing. An appointment is required.
The Town of Vestal Tax Assessor oversees the programs that can lower a residents taxes and/or provide financial assistance.
We provide assistance with applications for Real Property Tax Credit; Real Property Tax Exemption and School Tax Relief (STAR). We offer a volunteer assistance program to help seniors complete annual tax returns.
