The Homestead at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital, 418 North Main Street, Penn Yan, houses 130 Skilled Nursing beds, 20 Behavioral beds and one Respite bed for scheduled short-term stays.

The Homestead consists of four units, including two Skilled Nursing units, a Behavioral unit, and a secure unit where skilled nursing and special needs care for cognitively-impaired residents are provided. Short-term rehabilitation services also are provided on the Skilled Nursing units for those needing rehabilitation services while they transition to another level of care or discharge home.

Extensive renovations were completed in mid-2001 to modernize resident rooms, nursing units, hallways and common areas. In addition, a two-story building was added to provide an attractive, spacious dining-activities area for The Homestead residents, as well as a new kitchen/cafeteria/dining room to service the entire Penn Yan campus.

Meaningful activities and social opportunities are afforded our residents, including the HILT (Horticultural Intergenerational Learning as Therapy), the K-9 Healers and the Life Enrichment programs. HILT gives our residents an opportunity to share their knowledge of gardening with young people from the community. The K-9 Healers program brings together at-risk youth, The Homestead residents and certified therapy dogs in a program of socialization and activities. The Life Enrichment Program is a comprehensive therapeutic activity program for residents with a history or diagnosis of dementia, associated depression, or who may demonstrate behaviors that are difficult to manage.

Additionally, The Fire Side Inn - a restaurant-like fine dining experience is offered at The Homestead. The Fire Side Inn, where family or friends can enjoy a cozy, relaxing meal with their loved one who resides at The Homestead, is open Monday through Friday, with the exception of holidays, by reservation. Guests will be wined and dined with a candlelight dinner featuring an entrée from a special menu prepared by our chef.

One bed at The Homestead is devoted to Respite care. This program offers families who need temporary relief from care giving an option when the primary caregiver is ill or would like to take a business trip or vacation. Respite Care provides temporary, 24-hour skilled nursing care, nutritious meals, and recreational activities.
