  • SSA: Medicare Benefits

“[Medicare] helps with the cost of health care, but it does not cover all medical expenses or the cost of most long-term care. You have choices for how you get Medicare coverage. If you choose to have Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) coverage, you can buy a Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy from a private insurance company.”

NOTE: Typically, the SSA office can meet people in person to facilitate any service provides on the website. While pandemic precautions are in place, the SSA office only has meetings by appointment for extreme emergencies: to assist someone who never had a social security number and needs it for medical or employment purposes.

The Utica SSA office services people as far west as Canastota, as far east as Little Falls, as far north as Old Forge, and as far South as Earleville.

  • Nutrition Outreach and Education Project

During 2012 more than 625,150 New York households experienced food hardship (not being able to purchase the food that the household needed). During 2011, over 1 million New York children lived in food-insecure households The New York State Office of the Aging states that one in four older adults living at home is nutritionally at-risk, which is a factor in half of all older adult hospital admissions and readmissions.

The Nutrition Outreach and Education Program offers free and confidential services to connect hungry New Yorkers with nutrition assistance programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, the School Breakfast Program, and the Summer Food Service Program. We can evaluate your potential eligibility for SNAP benefits, help you gather necessary documents, and complete and submit the application for benefits, all at a location convenient for you.

LASNNY’s NOEP Coordinators cover Albany, Clinton, Fulton, Montgomery, Saratoga, and Washington Counties. In 2014-15, we provided information about SNAP to more than 7,500 people at community education events and assisted almost 2,000 households regarding their benefits, bringing more than $3.5 million SNAP dollars to the New York State economy.

Prepared by a project of Hunger Solutions New York, Inc., USDA/FNS, and NYSOTDA.
