Medicaid Waiver/Community Recreation - Recreation programs provide activities in the community for both adults and teens with developmental disabilities. The programs are designed to educate individuals of various recreational opportunities that exist in the community while at the same time helping them to meet new people, develop friendships, and have fun! Each program fosters the development of social skills, helps to promote independence, and provides opportunities for community inclusion.Recreation for Teens and Adults
The Medicaid Waiver Respite program is designed to provide short term respite for family members of individuals with developmental disabilities. Individuals must be 13 years of age or older and live in a non-certified residence (such as with a family member) in Onondaga County. Some of the activities that individuals have been involved in are dances, movie making classes, acting with The Red House Arts Center and much, much more! Transportation to and from events is provided for most activities.
The Rollin' KNICKS is a wheelchair basketball team co-sponsored by WILC and the New York KNICKS/Madison Square Garden. The team consists of individuals with varying physical disabilities. The team is in the championship division of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association. It practices in Queens, NY and plays in tournaments throughout the United States.
Walk with Ease is proven to help you increase physical activity, reduce bodily pain and improve your overall health. Do you suffer from arthritis or other chronic conditions? Then Walk with Ease is for you! Developed by the Arthritis Foundation, Walk with Ease will help motivate you to get into shape, walk safely and comfortably, improve flexibility, strength and stamina, reduce pain and feel great.
The Arthritis Foundation's Walk with Ease program is a six- week, self guided physical activity program. Walk with Ease can teach you how to safely make physical activity pat of your everyday life while reducing the pain and discomfort of arthritis and other chronic conditions. Walk with Ease is free and will provide you with the tools to keep you motivated and on-track.
Action for Older Persons (AOP) runs the TechSmart Computer Center, which offers classes, workshops, and tutoring in areas such as: digital photo basics, geneology, digital games, computer security and introduction to computers.
Hawkins Pond Nature Area, overseen by Broome County Parks and Recreation offers four miles of nature trails, a lake, and cross county skiing opportunities.
Run by Broome County Parks and Recreation, the Finch Hollow Nature Center is a natural history museum with one mile of scenic, easy-to-walk nature trails winding through field, pond, and wooded habitats. Offers nature studies, guided hikes & evening nature programs.
The Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program, operated by RSVP, helps those who have joint and/or muscle problems achieve improved mobility, strength and endurance. Program is free. Call for meeting schedule.
Community Partners After-schooloffers assistance at community-based after-school programs allowing for the inclusion of youth with developmental disabilities. The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) provides summer camp for youth (6-21 yrs) with a referral from doctor. Must have a neuromuscular disease.
Assistance with computer literacy at various locations in the community. SUNY Broome and Binghamton University student volunteers answer technology questions during drop-in hours.
