The NYS Energy Research and Development Authority, (NYSERDA), operates the Assisted Home Performance with Energy Star program. This program offers income-qualified homeowners a grant to cover energy-saving improvements, such as: insulation, doors, windows, and furnaces. Also offers low interest loans without regard to income level.
The NYS Energy Research and Development Authority operates EmPower New York, which is a service that provides new Energy Star replacement refrigerators and freezers. The program will also add insulation to homes and offer tips on how to save energy. The program does not provide roofs, windows or stoves. Eligibility: The homeowner must be eligible for HEAP. Those who heat with other sources of fuel should send a copy of their HEAP benefit letter along with the EmPower application.
The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), funded by the Department of Social Services (DSS) provides heating assistance to income-tested households for cold weather emergencies. Emergency heating equipment repair and replacement program may offer furnace replacement and/or repair for applicant-owned heating equipment. Assistance with cooling needs also available.
Utility Assistance
Project Share may provide grants to prevent any utility shut-off for a NYSEG or RG&E customer, including, but not limited to, natural gas, electric, propane, fuel oil, pellets, wood.
Provides undesignated temporary financial aid to low income people and families for daily necessities.
NYSEG's Hardship Protection allows NYSEG to contact DSS/other services for help with hardship case situations. Customers may be eligible for special protections if they have a serious medical condition, use life-sustaining equipment, have a member of the household in the hospital, or all members of the household are blind, disabled or 62 years of age and older.
Programs offered include: Budget Billing, Deferred Payment Agreements, Extra Security Plan, Good Neighbor Fund, Life Support Apparatus Program, Help During Hospitalization, and Third Party Notification.
This fund was created when NYSEG and RG&E combined their heating funds. Project SHARE is designed to help low income customers as well as active members of the military and veterans who are facing energy emergencies. Applicant must have an active NYSEG or RG&E account in their name, must have an active disconnect notice, must meet the HEAP income guideline except active duty military members and well-discharged veterans may qualify regardless of income. Office for Aging runs the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) which provides certification services to Broome County residents 60+ yrs or disabled persons <60 yrs on SSI or SSD who meet income guidelines for financial assistance with energy costs. Can also provide referrals for fuel or utility emergencies.
