Selfhelp operates six senior centers in Queensáthat offer Selfhelp housing tenants and more than 6,000 seniors living nearby a wide variety of educational and social activities.
Social workers can help with short-term counseling and referrals to community resources, advise on quality of life and entitlement services, and assist with applications for benefits. Exercise and health related classes, bi-monthly blood pressure screenings, vision and auditory health screenings, annual flu and pneumonia shots are available to all. Group activities include: Computer Classes, Arts and Crafts Classes, Citizenship Classes, English as a Second Language (ESL), Current Events Lectures, Bridge and Canasta Classes, Yoga and Exercise Classes, Tai Chi, Bereavement and Loss Groups, Music Appreciation and Choral Groups, Birthday, Anniversary, Theme Parties, Group Trips, Discussion Groups, Bingo, Mah Jongg, Ping Pong, Line Dancing, Ballroom Dancing, and Yuanji Dancing. Services include but are not limited to: spring and fall yard clean ups for folks who can't, provide transport for household errands and Drs. appointments, and provide companionship and other little helps to folks who are struggling.

Transportation Coordination: This service provides information, assistance, assessment, and scheduling for medical, social and shopping transportation needs.

Assisted Transportation: Community Action of Orleans & Genesee’s “Door Through Door” Transportation (CATS bus) is a specialized service for those who are unable to use other options due to their need for extra help. A driver is able to assist riders with their belongings and preparation for boarding the accessible bus.

Social Transportation: This program supports costs to transport groups of older adults who want to participate in social events or outings as approved by the Genesee Senior Foundation, Inc.

More than 330 seniors come to the Center each day to participate in a variety of programs and services. The Center is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Seniors 60 years of age or older can receive any of the services offered through the Center. The Center offers a host of weekly programs and activities to enhance and enrich a seniorÆs life. Seniors can choose from Yoga, TÆai Chi Chih, Salsa movement, painting classes, movies, trips, birthday celebrations, bingo, concerts, holiday parties and more. A new pilot shared, curb to curb bus service connecting seniors and people with disabilities with accessible transportation to employment and medical appointments.*

WHO: This new, pilot service is a private pay option for seniors 60 and older or a person with a disability people who needs a wheelchair accessible vehicle to get to non-Medicaid medical appointments such as dialysis (Medicaid recipients have transportation as a covered service and are not eligible for this program for medical appointments). Also, trips will be provided to a person with a disability traveling for employment. You must be an approved applicant to utilize this service. Applications will be reviewed by the Chemung County Office of Aging and Long Term Care, the Chemung County Volunteer Action Corps, or the Chemung County Mobility Manager.

What is the fare: The fare is $15 each way and service will be provided by a wheelchair accessible bus. If you do not require accessible transportation, there are other services such as taxi, which may be a more economical option.

Where: Service is provided within Chemung County and to Robert Packer Hospital or Corning Hospital. Service is curb to curb, and there is no additional charge for an aide or family member who may be accompanying you for your appointment.

When: Reservations are requested 3 days in advance, but not later than 2PM the day prior to the needed ride. Service hours are: Monday – Friday 5:30AM-8:30PM. Reservations may be made from 8:00AM-4:00PM. A time will be set to pick-up for your return trip; however, if you are finished early or late, call 734-5211 to adjust your pick up time.

Why: This pilot transportation option is being developed to fill a gap in service identified by residents and the Chemung County Coordinated Transportation Committee. Accessible transportation is difficult for people who do not live on bus routes or are not covered by Medicaid to access critical medical care. Current accessible transportation can be more expensive and this service is intended to be an additional accessible transportation option.

Available 24/7. This program allows people voluntarily seeking substance abuse treatment help with obtaining transport to either the Addiction Crisis Center on Court Street in Binghamton or UHS Binghamton General Hospital located at 10-42 Mitchell Avenue in Binghamton.

Who May Ride: Anyone who registers for an account on the website. You mus provide credit card information.

Description: Provides exclusive taxi-style rides anytime and anywhere on request via computer or smartphone. No advance reservations. Uber has a feature to "request a Ride" for someone else. Once a driver has been selected, you should call or text them to let them know they are picking up someone else. No assistance is provided.

Fees: Usually $7 and up depending on distance traveled. A cost estimator feature is available to determine cost of ride. Payment is by credit card only, through the website. No payment needs to be provided in the vehicle.
